In a historic beatification ceremony, the Ulma family from Markowa, Poland, was honoured on September 10, 2023. The beatification raises a fundamental question: Can an unbaptised child be beatified? In this extraordinary case, the answer is a resounding yes.
The Ulma family's story is one of tragic heroism. Executed by the Nazis on March 24, 1944, for their courageous act of sheltering Jews during World War II, the entire family, including their youngest child born prematurely during their execution, faced martyrdom. This child tragically passed away without baptism.
However, the Vatican's Dicastery for the Causes of the Saints issued a note on September 5, 2023, declaring that the youngest child had received "baptism of blood" through martyrdom alongside their siblings and parents.
Fr. Tadeusz Praskiewicz, a theologian from the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints in Rome, emphasized the theological principles of baptism of blood and desire in clarifying this unique situation. The Ulmas' fervent desire for the child's baptism, combined with their immersion in the "baptism of blood" during martyrdom, paved the way for their beatification.
This decision not only honours the Ulma family but also underscores the Catholic Church's belief in the sanctity of life from conception. It serves as a poignant message against abortion, emphasising that life begins at conception.
The beatification ceremony, attended by around 20,000 faithful, is a powerful tribute to the Ulma family's heroic sacrifice in sheltering Jews during one of history's darkest periods. Moreover, it highlights the Church's unwavering commitment to acknowledging the sanctity of life in all its forms.
