Carlo Acutis Set to Become First Millennial Saint
Geo George - May 2024
Carlo Acutis, born on May 3, 1991, in London, is on the path to becoming the first millennial saint of the Catholic Church. Acutis, who passed away at the young age of 15 due to leukemia, is celebrated for his profound faith and remarkable use of technology to spread religious teachings. His beatification in 2020 marked the recognition of the first miracle attributed to him, and now, a second miracle has been recognized, paving the way for his canonization.
Life and Legacy
Carlo Acutis was born in London but grew up in Milan, Italy. From a young age, he exhibited a keen interest in technology and used his skills to create websites dedicated to Catholic teachings and miracles. He maintained his parish's website and later managed a Vatican-based academy. Known as "God's Influencer," Carlo used the internet to share his faith and inspire others.
Despite his battle with leukemia, Carlo remained devoted to his faith, attending daily Mass and encouraging others to embrace the Catholic Church. His mother, Antonia Acutis, described him as a special child who never complained and served as a teacher of faith for her.
Second Miracle
The second miracle, which solidifies Carlo's path to sainthood, occurred in July 2022. A university student named Valeria from Costa Rica suffered severe head trauma in a bicycle accident. Her condition was critical, requiring craniotomy surgery, and doctors gave her a low chance of survival. Her mother, Liliana, prayed fervently at Carlo's tomb in Assisi, Italy, seeking his intercession.
Miraculously, Valeria began to recover shortly after her mother's prayers. She started breathing spontaneously, regained movement, and eventually her speech. A CT scan revealed that the hemorrhage in her brain had disappeared, a phenomenon doctors could not explain medically. Valeria's recovery was deemed miraculous, leading Pope Francis to recognize it as the second miracle needed for Carlo's canonization.
First Miracle
In 2020, Carlo was beatified after the Vatican confirmed the first miracle attributed to him. A 7-year-old Brazilian boy suffering from a rare pancreatic disease reportedly recovered after touching one of Carlo's T-shirts. This miraculous healing set the stage for Carlo's beatification, a crucial step towards sainthood.
Path to Sainthood
With the recognition of the second miracle, Carlo Acutis is set to become the youngest contemporary saint. His canonization will bridge the gap between the Church and young Catholics, demonstrating the relevance of faith in the digital age. Carlo's life and miracles highlight the power of prayer and the impact of living a faith-filled life.
Carlo Acutis' journey from a tech-savvy teenager to a soon-to-be saint is a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to spreading the Catholic faith. His legacy as "God's Influencer" continues to inspire people worldwide. The formal canonization ceremony date is yet to be announced, but Carlo's story already serves as a beacon of hope and faith for many, illustrating that holiness can be achieved in the modern world.
