A Father’s Unbreakable Promise: Love That Defied the Rubble
George Kom - September 2024
In 1988, a devastating earthquake struck Armenia, claiming the lives of more than 30,000 people. Amid the tragedy, a story of a father’s relentless love and determination emerged, showing the world the power of a parent’s promise.
As soon as the earthquake stopped, a father rushed to his son’s elementary school, only to find it reduced to rubble. His heart sank at the sight, but in the face of despair, he remembered the words he had always told his son: “No matter what happens, I will always be there for you.”
Fueled by these words, the father refused to give up. While other parents, broken with grief, tried to convince him that there was no hope, he didn’t listen. He knew his son was still out there, waiting for him. With his bare hands, he began to dig through the debris, one stone at a time.
For 36 hours, he worked tirelessly, ignoring the exhaustion, the cuts on his hands, and the voices telling him to stop. He kept going because he believed in the promise he made to his son.
After what felt like an eternity, he lifted a large slab of concrete, and from beneath the rubble, he heard a familiar voice. “Dad, it’s me!” his son called out.
The boy had been trapped with a small group of classmates, and they had survived the collapse. His son, full of faith, had told the other children, “Don’t worry, my dad will come for us. He promised.”
In that moment, the father’s love and unwavering belief had proven stronger than the destruction around them. His promise had been kept, and his son had never doubted him.
This powerful story reminds us of the strength that comes from love and the promises we make to those we care about. Just as this father never gave up on his son, our Heavenly Father never gave up on us. As it says in Matthew 7:11, “If you, being human, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him.”
In times of darkness and despair, let this be a reminder that love, faith, and determination can move mountainsþand even lift the heaviest of stones.
