9 important things to remember during Lent
Sr. Arpana - March 2024
Lent is a sacred time for reflection, renewal, and growth in faith. Bishop David L. Ricken offers key insights on how to make the most of this season. Here are nine essential things to remember as you journey through Lent:
1. Lent is a Time of Prayer
Lent is a 40-day-long prayer, leading us closer to Christ. Use this season to deepen your prayer life, whether through personal meditation, the Rosary, or the Stations of the Cross.
2. Fasting is More Than Just Giving Up Food
Fasting is a form of penance that helps us turn away from sin and towards Christ. Whether it's abstaining from meat on Fridays or giving up something personal, fasting should be a meaningful sacrifice.
3. Discipline Helps Us Grow
Lent is an opportunity to cultivate discipline—not just by giving something up, but by adding something positive to your daily life. Try praying more, showing kindness, or helping others.
4. Lent is About Dying to Ourselves
Beyond self-control, Lent calls us to identify parts of ourselves that are not Christ-like and surrender them. By joining in Christ’s suffering, we prepare to be renewed in faith.
5. Keep It Simple
Avoid overloading yourself with ambitious Lenten goals. Instead, focus on small, meaningful acts that bring you closer to God. Lent is a lifelong journey, not a one-time transformation.
6. Lent Reveals Our Weaknesses
Even with small sacrifices, we may struggle. This reminds us of our dependence on God. Acknowledging our weakness helps us seek His strength with greater sincerity.
7. Be Patient with Yourself
Failing to keep a Lenten commitment can lead to frustration, but God calls us to patience. See yourself as He does—with love and mercy. Lent is about progress, not perfection.
8. Reach Out in Charity
Lent isn’t just about personal sacrifices—it’s also about helping others. Whether through acts of kindness, volunteering, or donations, let your Lenten journey extend to those in need.
9. Learn to Love Like Christ
True Lenten sacrifice is about giving of ourselves, even in suffering. Christ’s ultimate act of love on the Cross is our guide to selfless love and compassion.
Lent is a spiritual journey that leads us to the foot of the Cross and ultimately to the joy of Easter. May this season bring you closer to Christ and renew your faith.
