When we honour Mary, we are imitating Christ
KCO Reporter - February 2020
Incarnation, the greatest event in the history of mankind, took place in the womb of Mary. Denial of Mary as the Mother of God is the denial of the essence of Christianity and the divinity of Christ. Mary is the Mother specially chosen by God to bring Christ into our into our lives to lead us closer to Her Son.
Just as Jesus come to us through Mary, it is the Will of God that we should come to Jesus through Mary. Great saints of the Church were great devotees of Mary as a way to give special honour to Christ. They understood that Holy Mary reflects the Light of Jesus Christ: Her “soul magnifies the Lord” (Luke 1:46)
Holy Mary had a great place in the salvation history. Mary is the first witness to the events of Gospel. She gave birth and participated in the events of Christ’s entire life. From the manger in Bethlehem to the foot of the cross at Calvary, no one ever loved the Son of God as Mary did.
According to Archbishop Sheen, there are two visions of each one of us in the mind of God-one as we are and one as He wants us to be. The objective of spiritual life is to bring these two images into accord through His grace. Holy Mary is the only one person in the history who has had only one image. She attained the perfect fulfillment of God’s Word and God’s will in Her life.
Unique Mission
Mary had a unique mission entrusted by God. She brought Jesus into this world to save the world by sacrificing his life on the cross. Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Son of Mary, came to die for us on the Cross, to redeem us from our sin. He came into this world to be the all-loving and all sacrificing image of God. He came to show us the way to Heaven and the Father.
All Christians are adopted sons and daughters of God through Jesus Christ by baptism. Church is a true family. He founded Church as the God’s covenant family. He placed his Mother as the mother of the entire family-church. Mother is the heart of a family. She is the source of everlasting love and refuge in times of trouble.
The Promised Woman
This is key to understanding Catholic devotion to Mary.
Mary stood at the foot of the Cross and watched Her only Son die a most horrible death. She suffered there a worse pain than any mother could ever endure. She made the greatest sacrifice God could ever call upon a mother to make. And then Our Lord, hanging in agony on the Cross, looked down upon Mary and St. John, the beloved disciple, and He said to St. John, “Behold, your Mother!” (John 19:27).
Jesus Christ gave His own loving Mother to be a spiritual Mother to us all. The Gospel says, “And from that hour the disciple [John] took her to his own home” (John 19:27). He took Mary to be his own Mother.
Our devotion to Mary in no way block us from honouring Christ. All the praises given to Mary do nothing but glorify God. Holy Mary leads the way; She clears the way; She lights the way; She guides us on the way to Her Son. That is why we love Mary and honour Her.
The Blessed Virgin Mary wants to keep all of us within the secure refuge of Her Immaculate Heart. She wants to lead us and guide us and protect us through the dangerous and difficult days to come. No one who has trusted in Her has ever been disappointed.
